DEF, even dumber and blind too.

Two years ago I couldn't hardly believe that I could be so dumb as to put gasoline in my new diesel. The other day I was even dumber when I put DEF into the fuel tank - they even color code the caps for those who can see. I guess I must be getting old. Anyway no harm was done and the only cost was a little time.

No harm? Did you pull the fuel tank and drain it?
There has been several reports of people doing that and blowing their brand new Ford diesels up to the tune of 10-15 thousand dollars. No way in heck I would drive it one foot without completely draining the fuel system and starting over if I had done that.

I uncoupled a hose at the fuel filter and pumped the contaminated diesel into a barrel. Just to be certain, I did remove the fuel tank - it's actually a pretty simple little task - and flushed the low pressure side of the fuel system. There was next to nothing in the tank after pumping it out - less than 2 quarts and only about a tablespoon of DEF in that bit of fuel. I think the water seperator would have caught it. The DEF sinks to the bottom of the tank so I pumped the fuel from the barrel into my Duramax and just lost a couple gallons in the bottom of the barrel.
  • I once grabbed the wrong container and put power steering fluid in a brake master cylinder. Ruined all the seals. Expensive. There's no substitute for paying attention.
  • LOL Terry, you better not think about getting a GM :B Lot more places to make mistakes under the hood.

    What he said X2

We all know that Diesel Exhaust Fluid is 67.5% water, and 32.5% Urea. Since water is the bulk of the composition on DEF; the areas of concern may be the following: (aside from the corrosivenes we have already highlighted).

    1. Injectors may need to be removed / cleaned propertly.

    2. All fuel lines, fuel pump, must be propertly flushed and cleaned.

    3. Fuel filters must be serviced.

    4. Remove the water fuel separator and install new one.

    5. Remove and flush all existing fuel from the tank and inspect the tank.

    6. Inspect fuel line assembly, fuel vent fittings; and hoses.

    7. Address probem right away. DEF sitting in the engine will cause much more damage due to the corrosiveneness of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

Common sense tells me not to start the engine, and drain the tank immediately to avoid any further contamination.

  • It might not be you.
When it comes to the diesel vs gas pumps.
There are NO color standards for what color the handles on the pump are for diesel and gas.

There is one station that bright green means diesel and visually you KNOW which one that is and there really is no chance of mistakenly grabbing it.

Then there is another station where the green handled ones are gas. :R

So if you've been fueling up at BP for the past week on the road and then pull into another gas station it's really easy to just grab the wrong pump handle.

Does DEF colored cabs vary from station to station?
