Being a new diesel owner I was curious if there is a difference where you purchased your def or if there are different brands, good and bad?

Never really looked at it as a "risk" or a "reward"....I was "given" a 2.5 gallon box of DEF the day I picked up my truck, May 9th, 2013...after it set for over a year, I got rid of it.....date had expired...didn't cost me anything, so I didn't lose anything....I had actually forgotten about it....DEF is DEF, Blue DEF is Blue DEF...it's the same as what's in the box...To me, it's more "convenient" to drive to the truck stop and pump it when I need it....Nothing "cheap" about it...again, same thing as in your box....The DEF I'm getting is just as pure as the DEF you're getting...(sorry, it IS the same thing)...and as much that is used at the truck stops, it too is "fresh" and not "out of date"...almost 28,000 miles, zero DEF issues....
One could get a bad 2.5 gallon jug just as well as one could get bad out of a pump....thus, that too could be costly..
I've heard of zero issues with the 2.5 gallon jugs, and zero issues with DEF being purchased at the pump, but that's just almost 2 yrs come May 9th.FishOnOne wrote:

I avoid purchasing DEF from a pump and prefer to purchase DEF from a sealed container. I reuse a Ford brand nozzle that screws onto the Blue DEF brand container and once completed I rinse the nozzle allow to dry in a clean spot and then place back into the large zip lock bag that it came in.
The bottom line for DEF is: Cleanliness is next to Godliness! And only use DEF that has a ISO label.
Free DEF would be a lousy deal, if you end up contaminating the system.:E:E:Eramgunner wrote:

- I've bought a lot of DEF in truck stops all across the USA and really the only time I have ever heard about a magnet is on this site. I have run into things to do that are a lot more complicated than putting the DEF nozzle in the correct place. Good luck with your DEF adventures everyone !!

Not yet, though I have read where others have had to use them. Seems some stations that sell DEF will have the magnet to let the person use while filling DEF...I've never needed one to refill, so guess I've been lucky.- For you guys buying DEF at the truck stop, have you ever run across a nozzle that required a magnet to use? You REALLY have to NOT be paying attention to what you are doing to allow the above scenario to happen..I've NEVER had that issue...On the Ram, the fuel filler neck is large enough to take the large fuel pump like big rigs use, and has a GREEN outer ring around the filler neck that say's in BIG BLACK BOLD LETTERING, "DIESEL ONLY"....(most Ram owners have purchased some type of cover for this capless fuel filler opening...(me included)....While on the other hand, you have a VERY SMALL DEF filler neck that has a BLUE screw on cap that states "AdBlue"...."DEF"....
"IF" I fill up with diesel and DEF at the pump, I fill with diesel first, (lid still on the DEF opening)...Finish diesel fill, remove diesel fuel pump, cover diesel fuel opening with my cap, THEN, unscrew the DEF cap and insert the VERY small DEF nozzle into filler hole and fill, when done, I put the cap back on the DEF filler neck opening...
Didn't own a DEF truck until May of 2013, and have never made the mistake of putting fuel in the DEF tank or vice-versa....I've also, as stated earlier, never had the first issue with getting "bad" DEF at a truck stop..I kept my fuel/DEF compartment very clean and also wipe down inside after refueling or adding DEF, (though I've never had an overflow incident or ran over into the compartment containing the DEF or Diesel fuel filler necks.
With Semi's using large volumes of DEF, from the research I've done, it appears that the tanks of DEF are replenished often enough to where the DEF is "fresh"..as opposed to someone, purchasing a 2.5 gallon of DEF to have, "just in case", never use it to where it is passed it's recommended time to use it and have to throw it away, or are tempted to use it and THAT might cause more of an issue than getting it at a truck stop.- I think what lynmore was alluding to was some folks who buy DEF at truck stops fuel lanes accidentally put the DEF in the fuel tank as both the DEF and fuel fills are in same fill location behind fuel cap (at least w/ Ram and Ford).
- I buy DEF at truck stops for my semi trucks every time they need it right along with all the big trucks on the road and have never had any problem with it. Now days you never see drivers buying jugs of DEF. I have a 2014 Ford 6.7 and the only DEF that I have ever put in it was bought at the pump too.
