Yes, you have summed it up pretty well. I have several friends that work in the industry. There are differences in construction such as wood vs aluminum studs, aluminum vs composite sides etc but they are all built to a price point.
They also sell over 450,000 TTs and 5vers a year. So, like it or not, they understand their market. It is not likely to change soon.
I have seen some gorgeous costom built units on the RV channel, if you have an extra $100,000.00 or so to spend.
