I used to go and pick up stuff that I bought with my PU and various trailers if it was withing 800 miles as I could do it cheaper than hiring. With the advent of Uship I now hire it done as it's a very competitive business where you can get some very good bids. Last month I bought a 15' BatWing mower in Orlando which would take me two days and $280 in fuel. Low bid was $500 (of three) and it took longer than promised for delivery as he had to have a piston put in his Dodge truck plus a blown tire. Gave him an extra $50.
OP, my point is even with a back haul maybe half the time there are plenty of other people looking for a load and will do it on the cheap.
