So, I finally hauled my first load today, but I "lost" money by having to stay in a hotel last night since I couldn't take the load yesterday.
It was a local delivery for me, near where I live. Fortunately the dealer was able to accept it at 4:35pm. I stopped by their location hoping they could take it. I wasn't able to call ahead and check because I mistakenly left my cell phone at home.
The dealer was about an 8-10 mile side trip from my route home, and the dealer is about 30 minutes from home. WOOHOO!
Yes, you can sleep in your truck. Will I? NO!!!!!
I would never be able to get comfortable enough to sleep in the back seat of my truck, or on the floor, if the back seat is folded up. (the floor is uneven)
If I decide to keep doing this, I will pick and choose my loads so I can do it in a single day of driving - staying somewhat local to my home base. If I decide to go across the state, I can shack up at my parent's place if I go that direction.
I can't see the point in going out and buying a new truck, hitch(es), safety gear, etc., with the expectation of making a living doing this.
If someone already has a truck (preferably one that is paid for) and has the hitches already, and is just bored and wants a way to spend some time, and make a little side money (on top of a retirement check, etc) then it makes sense.
Or, if you are single and don't have a need to be home to spend time with family, and don't mind living out of the back seat of your truck, then go for it.
If someone has their mind set of doing this, and doesn't have a truck, go buy a used one - I'd say something 5-9 years old and give it a whirl.
Insurance through the transport company will cost me $271 a month on a truck valued at $40k, though the truck is really worth about $45k+ (since it has really low miles for the year)
I don't plan on doing this full time as my only source of income.
I'm beginning to question how much I want to do it using my current truck.
I'm sort of annoyed with my current daily driver, and have contemplated replacing it with another full size truck. Last summer I bought a beater "farm truck" to use as a junker to go to the dump with, haul yard waste, firewood, huntin' rig, and winter daily driver. THe problem is, I've been driving it A LOT more than planned, and I enjoy driving a full size truck as a DD again.... and it's actually more ergonomic than my 2012 Jeep daily driver, which has spent most of the last 6 months in the garage.
With that said, if I sell the Jeep and get another truck (for daily driving, dump run, wood hauler, etc) I'd put that newer truck in service as my RV transport rig (if I keep doing the RV transport thing) and retire the old beater farm truck.
There's so many other things that a decent truck would be more useful for due to my other trailer towing needs.... then I'd use the dually for hauling my AF811 camper and trailers for camping duties, and not run the thing in to the ground transporting RVs with it.
No you can not by DOT laws sleep in your truck...they do not recognize sleeping in your truck as a legal place to sleep...has to be an 8ft by something area. Plus you are required by DOT to keep a log and if and when you get inspected they will fine you for not having record of a proper sleep over.
Yes you can sleep in your pick up truck. YOu CANNOT log sleeper berth for those hours though. You have to log OFF DUTY. FOr a legal sleeper it needs to be 24 x 24 x 74 inches IIRC.
