My dad grew up in the '30s, and the walk to high school was six and a half miles. Sometimes a car would come along and give him a ride, but sometimes no cars came by. Life in the country.
As a young adult he had a Model A, and he rebuilt the engine himself with oversize pistons. He loaned it to his younger brother, who tried to drive it up Pike's Peak in high gear and blew that engine. At least that's the story he always told us; I never asked his brother (my uncle) for his version.
When I was a kid, I rode the bus to school! Gotta love progress. Soon they'll fix it so all the students can telecommute (log in and learn).
