Diesel engines why not more available in smaller vehicles ?

Chevy Cruze and Equinox both offered diesels, last I looked. At the higher end, several European 3.0 liter diesels are available, in models from Jeep, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. VW used to offer them as small as 1.9 liters, but the scandal ruined that.

BMW does offer a 2.0 liter diesel in the 328 series, BTW.
