Unfortunately, the VW diesel scandal did change the landscape. That TDI, probably Touareg, would town over 7,000 pounds with ease and got great mileage. I own a 2011 Touareg V-6 and can also tow over 7,000 pounds and get a little over 23-24 mpg on the highway, not towing. Got 14 mpg towing the only time we used it. However, I also have a 3.4 ton GMC D/A combo crew cab that I use to tow my 30' FW and 19' boat to the lake for camping and fishing. Love the diesel and would buy another one, but wife would probably not agree and the next vehicle will be hers.
