2008+ Diesel emission standards added about $2000-4000 of cost compared to gas engines. This could explain why those that have offered diesels along side of gas engines in the same model, only offer on higher trim levels. That up-charge amount including that on 3/4+ ton trucks will never be returned in fuel or maintenance savings. However, the intangible and often unquantifiable values that diesels offer tend to retain much higher resale value through 10+ years.
I had a 2012 diesel Passat that I loved. I've had a number of mid-sized sedans and always returned 21-22mpg with my spirited driving style. Same with my current DD - Subaru Outback. Naturally aspirated 4-cylinders were often frustrating. 6-cylinders satisfying. 80k miles lifetime average in the TDI - 37.5mpg, plus 50% more distance between fuel refills.
