I use my bikes 90% of the time so a few mpg don't mean shi* to me. Whatever floats your boat but like I said before the party for diesels is over because of emissions.
I am not sure what you are trying to prove with those articles with one being about an owner and another thing that happened in Europe, but the fact still remains that today's diesels are a lot cleaner than many direct injected gasoline engines. While I really don't care which emits more, I am just stating the facts. Heck, even my post 2010 emissions regulated Ram 2500 Cummins emits less emissions then that pre-2004 emissions regulated 8.1L of yours.
Although I don't think I would call the added 9 mpg that the more powerful 2.0L 328d and it's 40 mpg fuelly average has over the 31 mpg fuelly average of the 1.4L turbocharged direct injected Sonic gets just a few, but that is just me.
