VW auto group (Porche, Audi, VW) has decided to end all of their diesel production due to the scandal they created while others are doubling down on them or starting to put diesels in their US lineups which they never had before like Mazda. Some may not want to spend the capital or time to become emissions compliant just like Caterpillar didn't want to back in 2010 which allowed others to fill the void instead of a decline in diesel sales. I believe since VW is leaving the market, it has opened the door for others to take their place which seems to be happening since there are more passenger diesel vehicles available in the 2018 US market then there has ever been.
I also believe ignorance and group think is driving the current antagonism for diesels. Some actually think that their direct injected turbocharged car puts out less emissions than modern diesels because of the VW scandal, but in reality it is the opposite for many GDI engines. If your reasoning for buying a turbocharged GDI engines is because it is more powerful than a small diesel then you have a valid reason, but if it because you think it is due to better emissions then you are making an ignorant decision in most cases.
Attacking GDI engine particulate emissions
Gasoline engines emit more particulates than diesels
Like I said before, don't care either way and prefer a GDI engine if I want performance in a small car, but if you think modern diesels pollute more because of what you heard from your favorite Californian news site then you are dead wrong and should probably do your own research rather than being a sheep to their group think. With the amount of PM that comes out of today's GDI engines, I would not be surprised to see a particulate filters on them in the near future.
Lot of very silly anti diesel hysteria.Porsche are now blaming Audi for their non compliant diesels. As they were basically dropping their Diesels into Porsche SUV's . Yes Porsche and Audi are part of VW Corporation, so are a lot of other makes. Still like BMW the VW Corporation is developing new Diesel engines and in Europe 49% take up compared to the relatively tiny percentage in NA is nothing to be sneezed at.
