I certainly can believe this. The TSI gas engine in my VW Alltrack has terrific performance and punches way above its weight for only 170 hp in a 3400 lb car. But mileage is lackluster and the soot inside the tailpipe tells me it's not exactly a super clean burning engine.
I agree, the tailpipe in my 7 year old Cummins is much cleaner than the one in my 5 year old Audi GDI gas. NOX is the issue with new diesels, not smog or particulates.
