Mine is 2001 and NOT saying I've know everything, here is what I do.
I use what Cummins dealer puts over the counter at me. Because they made a change several years ago, and I would not of known of it unless buying from Cummins dealer, your dealer might be different. I buy what I need usually for about 3 or 4 oil changes. I do use stock Fram air filters (and they are not as good IMO) so I change it every 3500 miles.
IMO Nothing better than clean oil and clean air for these. I change oil about every 3-4 thousand miles. Don't like synthetic oil because diesels mix a lot of soot in motor with oil, so I keep it clean and not use it for 50,000 or 75,000 miles.
EGT gauge is worth having and using to prevent oil from Coking in turbo. When fuel pump went out (2005) , I upgraded to FASS fuel system. Much better to change filters and to inspect. And I don't know how some of these guys are getting 22 or better MPH or Better. I get on average 19-20 tank to tank, and that is manual math not overhead gauge.
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/ is worth the money each. Especially if you break down somewhere. You can either look up to see what problem might be in their forum. Or if being worked on by garage you'll be able to see if they are giving to line of BS. The filter minder on top of air filter housing, don't even look at it. Change air filter when it looks dirty. Your never going to be the fastest out there but you'll get there everytime. Most bullet proof light vehicle there is IMO. Be carful changing coolant and do homework to make sure you put right stuff back in. Not unusual to get over 500,000 miles. Body will fall apart before motor. If steering is giving you a hassle look up "lukes link", sort of more heavy duty.
Notice I said IMO a lot?
Baldwin oil filter BT7349Wish I could get Baldwin off self at local store. I use Wix because that is good second choice to Baldwin IMO
Baldwin Fuel Filter PF7977
any of you guys ever use these filters in your dodge diesel trucks
I use Shell rotella 15w40 oil and motor seems to run well on it and does not use any oil, I run the stock 4" thick mopar air filter

I want the motor to last as long as possible
