Complete waste of money to use synthetics with oil changes intervals of less than 10k miles and destructive to use a 5W motor oil which is what most of the diesel oils are rated at. Only benefit to a 5W-40 is driving in subzero temperatures much of the time.
Heavy towing is considered "severe duty" and it can decrease the service intervals by as much as 75% (if you have severe duty and dirt or offroad conditions). I reduced my service intervals by 50% as half the miles on my truck are when it is used in this fashion.
