Diesel or Gas

I am going to go to a FW from my current Class A gasser. I know that diesel are better for towing etc. My issue is that I am retired and don't drive a lot of miles yearly and I know that diesels need to drive but, if it is driven say 4k to 5k a year towing, is that ok or should I look at say with a gas truck it is more appealing not to have to spend 8-9k for diesel but the higher mileage is to. I am looking to buy a 2015 F 250. I am looking at about 10k FW

  • Our Diesel puts on an average of 7k per year and it doesn't seem to mind. It has also put up with my driving it to work at less than a mile away from home.
  • Seeing as how your in Colorado you will be much happier towing with a diesel vs gas. And no a diesel is not going to suffer from only going 4-5k mi a year. Only concern could be DEF going bad but you can address that by only adding a single 2.5gal jug each time it gets low rather than filling completely.
  • Remember..it's not how much you can pull...it's how much you can carry that is the main concern...in a 3/4 ton truck.

    Thanks and good luck!

The F250 payload is 3100# for what I am looking at
  • It really depends on the fiver you buy. I think below 12-13k loaded fiver it's all personal preference... But above that you are squarely in diesel territory.

  • A lot of this decision is how big & heavy the FW is. If you could post which model(s) you are considering, it will probably improve the advice you'll get.
