From my brother's experience:
There are lots of late model diesel trucks available out there..since there are so many, I'd look elsewhere at a non 6.0 Ford.
Supposedly the later 6.0's had the issues resolved but the reputation damage is done and well documented.
...and yes, a diesel is a GREAT tow vehicle and will work just fine as a daily driver...mine has for years.
