Diesel or Gas

I am sure this has been hashed out a million times before, but...

I have decided to sell my current TV and move up to a 3/4ton. I found a really nice F250 Harley Davidson Diesel with low mileage for a pretty good price. My question is: Is it really a huge benefit anymore to have a diesel compared to the new 3/4 ton gassers?

The truck will also be my daily driver, so will the better pulling fuel economy outweigh the worse city driving economy? Also, our winters are very cold, would that affect your decision between gas or diesel?
  • Before you buy a 6.0 diesel, check into them further. The Tow Vehicle forum will generate many owner responses.
  • Thanx for the replies. The f250 is a 2007 with the 6L Turbo Diesel. Currently, Diesel fuel is about 15% cheaper than gas here in Canada. $1.19/L compared to $135/L for regular gas($1.50/L for premium, which I use while towing).

my experience is that diesel will give better city driving, highway driving, and towing mpg than comparable gas. So you won't sacrifice mileage as a daily driver.

As to "huge" benefit, depends on your priorities and importance of vehicle attributes IMHO. Don't know about canadian fuel prices, but at least in our area of the U.S. diesel fuel prices are same/higher than gas, so part of the economic payback went away, coupled with the higher intial cost makes justification on a cost payback pretty hard.

I prefer my diesel for towing, many do, many don't. My experience is that long term maintence costs of a diesel are pretty close to gas vehicles I've owned.

As to cold, mine has sat out a week with temps down to -20F and it starts right up. I think the old hard start problems at low temp virtually went away with the glow plugs used on vehicles made in the last 15 years or so.

However, one disadvantage to winter city driving with a diesel is you'll find the take a LONG time to warm up and get heat to the cab if they aren't under load.

If your looking used, IMHO unless your dead set for gas or diesel, find a nice rig that will do what you want and get it regardless of diesel or gas.
  • I would take a diesel over the gasser anytime with the exception of the 6.0 . Ford has been making the Harley editions since 2004. What year and engine are you looking at?
