Diesels get on average 20% better fuel economy - the fuel has more energy per gallon VS gas. The cost difference from 5 to 10 quarts of oil (duramax) isn't that much - far less then the fuel cost difference per oil change. Some hold more oil. There is no tune up on a diesel, and the glow plugs are about on par with spark plugs (on most diesels) for cost to change, and at 135k on my factory plugs life is good.
