When was the last time you were around a diesel? Just about all diesels made in the US in the past 5 years have strict emissions that eliminate the smell, soot, etc. and most are also much quieter than older Diesel engines. Even my 2006 duramax is quiet for a diesel and does not emit foul odors.
To the OP, I read at least once a week of someone asking the question on here about the increased cost of diesel maintenance. I just don't see it. Yes you pay more for oil changes but you also drive at least twice as many miles between oil changes. Fuel filter changes are easy and only required twice as often as what is recommended on most gasoline engines. Fuel is a dime or so per gallon higher in my area, but as someone pointed out, there is about a 20% increase in MPG so it averages out.
You haven't yet told us what you will be towing and how often, but if I had to do it over again I'd pick another diesel.
