Used diesels are a bargain if you cna find one with low enough miles and its in good shape. Buying a new one is prohibitively expensive to a lot of people, but if you let someone else take the depreciation from the first couple years, you are set.
My father in law had a 2007 Chevy extended cab 2500 with the diesel. In 2010 I bought my truck new, in 2011 he traded it in for about what I paid for my new truck. It had 60K miles and was in excellent shape. The timing was off and the extended cab was too small... but I still wonder what might have been...
