We bought our 2003 when it was new and now have 145,000 on it. Perhaps ours is different but we definitely know that we are towing something when we climb the Cascades with our camper and trailer carrying 2 horses.
We have enjoyed our truck but we had to replace the turbo at 130,000. We were out of state so we had to go to a Dodge dealer. OUCH it was expensive!!! We also found that due to the extra weight of the trans and engine tires don't last as long. We had to replace both ball joints. In the winter it takes at least 5 miles of driving before the motor warms up enough to heat the cab.
Up here diesel is currently about 25 cents a gallon more than regular gas. After reading about how well the gas engines preform in the newer trucks we will likely buy one when it is time to replace our truck since we will never tow more than 8500 pounds.
