I heard someone ( a very young car salesman )say something about having to put in "$300" worth of additives to protect/clean the exhaust system? I was pretty hesitant to put any faith in Juniors opinion, as it was clear that he was clueless about everything. Any truth to that?
Think others have already covered this well. I will just add the salesman is wrong.
Now others have said the new diesels need no additives, and again I will say WRONG.
The fuel has changed so much that the lubricity one once received from the diesel fuel to keep your fuel pumps and fuel system parts lubricated is now almost gone.
The former high sulfur fuel available up to around 2006/2007 was a very good lubricating fuel, with a wear scar rating in the 420 range.
The ultra low sulfur diesel made for the US now is really poor for lubricating value. It has a wear scar rating of 520, which means it has 25% LESS lubricity than the fuel it replaced.
Bosch, a leading manufacturer of diesel fuel system components, has said any diesel fuel with a wear scar rating over 460 will cause long term wear issues with ANY diesel, new or old.
So, like it or not, a lubricity additive is almost mandatory, no matter what your owners manual says.
