Our fleet manager says counting dollars over the first 5 years of our vehicles lives, diesel engine are NOT EVEN CLOSE to being worth the initial outlay, and subsequent repairs and maintenance. And that factors in resale as well, as they all get switched every 5 year. The diesels that he has been required to provide, do to contract / tender requirements, tend to have expensive repairs (Pumps, injectors accelerated front end destruction, etc).
We all run 1 ton's, at 90%+ of GVWR all of the time. 18000 miles a yeare.
If you want a diesel and low RPM towing, go for it. But I would consider a diesel tow rig a "premium" item.
