Just for fun though I would like to ask...
If there was no difference in the price for the same model new gas or new diesel truck... which would you buy?
Gas or Diesel?
Ha ha, thats a very interesting question.
#1 Fuel costs are about 12% higher for diesel than 87 octane gas ($3.43 for 87 vs $3.85 diesel). I am fairly certain that the diesel will get at least 12% better gas mileage, therefore making the fuel costs negligible. Advantage diesel
#2 Concerns with poor quality diesel and potential for catastrophic failure with new EPA regulations call in to question the reliability of new diesels. Advantage gas
#3 Long term reliability. Diesel engines last longer (provided no catastrophic failures). Advantage diesel
I would honestly have to say that if I was in the market for a HD truck and the diesel was the same price, or even a marginal upcharge, I would probably get the diesel. If I could buy a factory extended warranty that fully covered the engine for 100,000 miles I would definetely get a diesel.
