With diesel running 20-30% more per gallon and getting 20-30% more MPG...any claims of fuel efficiency gains becomes a wash.
And with gas engines capable of ever larger tow ratings, much of the diesel advantage goes away. Especially when looking at up front costs.
I would still lean diesel if over 14-16k but much below that range, gas is a very effective combination. In the middle of that range it would likely depend on the number of miles and driving conditions.
