I say BS. if he did have a DEF tank, filling with water and very quickly the truck will be giving warnings, and shortly thereafter speed limited, starting at 55mph and eventually 5mph till he gets it drained out and filled with DEF fluid.
5 gallons of DEF lasts me about 6,000 miles, and the cost is about $10-15.
