I may be paranoid but if I were to try to bring in a truck from Mexico I would look into every nook and cranny to make sure there are no drugs being smuggled in . that's all you need is prison time for smuggling

If you are talking about importing a vehicle from the US into Mexico there are restrictions. The one that killed us is that the vehicle can not be more than 10 years old. We sold our classic VW in May and it hurt me.

When we were shopping for a vehicle here we tried Mercado Libre, but didn't want to have to travel across the country to get what we wanted. We finally found that there is a Facebook page for vehicles that you could sort into just your area. Once we found that, we found exactly what we wanted and here. It's called Marketplace. It makes using Facebook worth while!

Export US, import Mexico/South America

First, I will bet the TAXES would kill you !

I would not so it ! The modern diesel have 2 strikes against them. EXTREMELY COMPLICATED emission systems that no one in those areas would be capable of repairing (even if they COULD get the parts) and lower fuel economy.

LSD vs ULSD could also be an issue.

Does the state your going to register in have emissions testing? If it does I would be leery of importing any vehicle until I knew it would pass emission tests.

I have lived in MX for 15 years and am a RP. No USA plates or TIP's for me. I want a 1-ton dually. I prefer a Cummings. I haven't been able to find a decent used diesel truck with MX plates.

I want another RV to play with. I had a 1990 Ford diesel with a slide in Lance and Caribou campers, back in 2006 for 6 years continuously in Mexico(I got lucky and received a 10 RV permit on my truck).

So I am looking to import. I have imported vehicles over the years and am familiar with the process. I am trying to decide if I should try to import a 2010 -11 truck or go for a pre-2007 truck. According to Ed’s post I should not be concerned with LSD, since there is no more being pumped. If I go for an early 2000’s truck than diesel is not an issue but age of the truck is.


BTW, there are ways to import older vehicles. I imported a 1987 minivan 4 years ago. It is just a different tax rate, a different classification, and the Aduana agent getting up an the right side of the bed the day my broker brings the paperwork.

We read about the importation of "classic cars." The final decision was that it could potentially be a big problem, so we sold it and made a killing.

When actually arriving at the border with our Mexican plated Durango and an 8 foot cargo trailer also plated in Guerrero, as you said, it wasn't tough to get things done.

Probably is prohibited. If allowed you will pay around 25 to 40% of the book value. The dealers do not have the correct software yo fix the truck.

The importation of a new vehicle such as an rv costs approx 22% of the value. I did it.

Used, as Talley said, has to be 10 years old, not more, not less. We are now looking at importing a Class B and will be investigating what is permitted and what the cost is.

Chris. When did you do that import? I know that a few years ago it became more expensive. If it is considered a commercial vehicle could be even more,

I too am starting to look for a new RV. I have not decided between a cab-over camper or a trailer. Either way I would like a 1-ton diesel dually. I haven’t found many diesels for sale in my area of Mexico. (Tally, Thanks for Facebook Marketplace tip).

Was the trailer you imported brand new? When did you import the trailer? Would that 22% rate apply to all non motorized used RV’s?

Have you become a Mexican citizen?

I have learned that the age limitations on vehicle imports are not as fixed as many people post. In Jan 2014 I imported a 1987, top of the line, mini van (27 years old) with 85000 miles. I purchased the van for 4000 pesos and paid just under $900 usd for the import process. I will drive that van until the salt air completely disintegrates it.

Chris, talk with some different brokers about the class B you are looking for. You might not be limited to only that “10 year old van”. Things are flexible at the border. It really comes down to this phase “at the present time”. There are many different ways to bring things across. I have never used them but they state that older, non-classic, vehicles can be imported.

OldWiz, One of the reasons I am considering a 20 year old truck is they are less complicated, can run on all types of diesel, and are less expensive.
