Buy used, tow overloaded, be as cheap as possible. What your really doing is either saving your money for the kids, or into an activity you can not afford. Try splurging just once in your life, buy that item you want, take care of it and enjoy it for years. The one thing you all are missing is the higher resale value the diesel offers. I sprang for the diesel for the power, and fuel economy. Now that the truck has been paid off for some time, I can enjoy the fuel savings and higher resale. There is no way a big block is going to get 22 mpg solo, or have the power of a turbo diesel. Bet my latest purchase would really send you cheapskates reeling, brand new corvette convertible. Did I need this car, no. Is this car practical, no. Do I enjoy it,YES! Sometimes ya just get what you want because you want it. I get to live this life one time, I plan to enjoy it to the max. A smoky burnout with the top down an hitting 60 mph in 4.2 seconds is something that is priceless to me. Yea I guess I should have saved my money. When old I could be saying I could have instead of I did. Enjoy your time hoarding for the rainy day if you like, not me.
Just the opposite of everthing written here is what allowed me to semi-retire early. Being cheap has nothing to do with it. It's all about my financial IQ! I hardly hoard for a rainy day, but I do rest easy in the fact that in my 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and hell, even my 80's if I make it that far, I can buy what I want, when I want, be it a new diesel or a new Vette. I live my life to the fullest every day, and one of the things I can directly contribute that to is being financially wise with how I spent my money and where it went.
I really don't give a hoot about resale value either. Why in the world would I want to get rid of something I just got? I don't buy something just to sell it later on. Another reason that I could retire early.
A quote that is taped to my monitor: "There are two kind of people today; those who pay interest, and those who earn interest. Which would you rather be?" I lived my life to save and invest first, then spend what's left over. My "poor" buddies, who all have nice new toys every couple of years and are in debt up to their eyeballs and beyond, believe in spending first and then saving what's left over. Unfortunately for them, that is usually little to nothing. To them, it's all about the status symbols they possess. I don't need a status symbol, I need something that can do what I need done!! They rib me for not buying a brand new "xxxx", but then can't figure out how we can disappear to Panama a couple times a year. Hmmmm...... They don't understand that the choices I made back then directly relate to what I can do now, and in the future. He who dies with the most toys.....still dies.
Buy what you want, but don't call me cheap. If you can afford it, more power to ya! It's your money, your future. I look forward to a bright one myself. :B My kids have their own investment accounts, so they don't need our money.
