If you mean by recent 2011 and newer trucks the Cummins engine would be my first choice in an engine but my first choice in a truck that integrates the engine, transmission, exhaust brake, electronics to provide optimum performance is the GM Duramax. The Ram is an excellent truck and more people buy the Ram 1-ton trucks than GM/Chevy 3500 and Ford F-350 trucks combined.
What people usually overlook is that the "engine" may be reliable but you also have electrical, air conditioning, brakes, suspension, frame, and other points of failure that can require a trip to the repair shop.
The warranty is also a lot more important with a diesel engine as the cost of repairs can be 4-5 times that of a gas engine truck. Check out repair costs for injectors or the turbo and you will get the picture.
Fuel tank capacity for towing is also important and some trucks ship from the factory with a 36 gallon tank that may be adequate and others have a 25 gallon tank that is not, especially with diesel where it is not sold at most gas stations.
Last year Ford out sold GM and Ram combined in the 1 ton version. Doubt much will change this year.

Not sure where you're getting your info from, but you might look for a different source.
