I installed an extra capacity diff cover and used "ultra black" per instructions. - theoldwizard1Explorer IIPermatex #2 on the cover. Leave the other side dry.

OK this is my first time doing this. I have the correct fluid and I hope the correct gasket. My question is: do I use permatex on the gasket or leave it clean?
You've never done it before? I hope you lift weights. Pumping that oil in there takes time and muscle. Gasket? Nope. Look at the post above.....
Make sure you use the right stuff. My service manual calls for 75W-140 synthetic for my Dodge, when towing. - jdc1Explorer II
