Differential fluid thoughts/recommendations...

I'm getting ready to put a new larger differential cover onto my TV differential (2012 4x4 2500 Ram Laramie Longhorn w/6.7 Cummins). The standard fluid is 75W-90 for rear and ATF+4 for front. Should I change anything? I tow about 25% of the time and will be towing a 12k Montana into Yellowstone and Teton at the end of May.

  • This is nothing more than the product of the power of advertising and perhaps preying on folks with too much money in their pockets? Do you really think that the OP is of the ilk who change their own rear end/differential fluids? The engineers who designed the truck know exactly how much oil is needed for cooling even under the most arduous of conditions. Do you really think that the OP is going to monitor the differential temperatures of his rig? You would be lucky if an owner pays attention to or knows what an EGT is! There is plenty wrong with more if the more is only to pad the wallets of the geniuses who make us believe that we just gotta have it.

BTW OP, are you SURE that the spec for the front differential is ATF+4?

    Cheers!

    WHY?

You think you know more than the engineers who designed and built your truck? leave it alone and follow the manufacturers requirements regarding type of fluids and change intervals.

It's not doing less than or worse than as engineered, it's doing more for the life of the drive axle. More oil for cooling, longer change interval, temp probe port, magnet, drain plug. What's wrong with more?

  • Shouldn't need any friction modifier (But most gear oils come with it now a days). Oddly, my manual states to use 75W-90 on the front axle as well instead of ATF+4. I don't think there was a change in actual axles, just the connecting geometry.

Lastly, look at your tooth pattern and make sure you have good even wear on your differentials while the covers are off.
  • Does it use a friction modifier? I noticed one web site mentioned synthetic for towing. Are you sure the front is plus 4?
