Do all TTs sway?

Hi,
My previous RV experience is with towing my father's fiver with a diesel dually F350. I know how nice this set-up was.

I am leaning towards buying a 28 foot TT (roughly 32 foot from the hitch) which would be pulled by a 3/4 ton gas pickup. (Unless a strong argument was made for a Diesel)

Even with an appropriate hitch, how much sway should I expect? I really would like a mostly enjoyable towing experience like my dad's above set up.

Thank You! in advance.

  • We experience very little if any sway with a TV/TT combo that is very similar to the towing combo you asked about. With a good quality WD/SC hitch that has been properly dialed in, along with proper inflation of TV and TT tires, TT sway should not be an issue. Make sure that tongue weight is in the 15% range and you should be good to go.

We've been towing our 10K TT with our Chevy HD gasser for 7 years and enjoy very comfortable tow, even on windier days at interstate speeds. I have passed many a TT being towed by 1 ton trucks, some even duallys that have exhibited lots of sway. Also pass many sizable TTs being towed by newer half ton trucks that appear very stable going down the freeway, as one can see it isn't as simple as getting a huge truck to solve sway issues.
  • I have no sway on my TT. A properly adjusted, quality, integrated WD/sway control hitch (like the Reese Dual Cam and others) will provide stress and sway free towing of a TT.
  • Sway is generally caused by improper trailer loading.

I have never experienced sway with my TT, with or without my WDH.

I have towed at 70 in 20-30mph cross winds and the TT is rock solid and barely felt.

I have had a 3rd trailer behind the TT that swayed a little (following ruts) and it didn't pull the TT anywhere.

Set it up correctly and don't worry about it.
  • I do not know that you can predict sway. I towed a 25 ft. TT with an underpowered 2002 Ford F-150 2x4. Very poor performance but no sway.

I now tow a 25 ft. Dutchman with an E-Boost F150 4x4 and no sway issues. I have the Blue OX WD hitch the dealer installed when I bought the trailer. I do not have any anti-sway apparatus except for what is supposed to be part of the hitch design. I also tow at 60 mph.

Still there are many who go to great lengths to reduce TT sway. I think it is a function of TT design and/or the TT and TV compatibility.
  • I get zero sway...

30 foot 6006 lbs fully loaded behind a GMC 1/2 ton with Husky WDH. Recently added one friction anti-sway bar because it was included in the purchase of a used husky hitch set (I needed higher torsion bars and it was cheaper to purchase an entire used hitch assembly)

I had zero sway with the old hitch, and still zero sway with the new hitch.

With the hitch properly setup, you should experience none to very little sway. Sway in a trailer ususlly is due to not setting up the hitch, too little tongue weight, improper tire inflation, etc.
