Unless you are putting on 40-50k miles per year...longevity really doesn't come into play.
- It's nothing for a gas engine to last 250k miles.
- At the same time, diesels have gotten less reliable and more expensive to repair as more and more emissions gear is tacked on.
For the typical 12k miles per year user, the rest of the truck is old and worn out before the gas engine dies.
Pulling a big heavy trailer is where diesel makes sense for typical RVers. Then again, your base gas engines have close to 400hp. Compared to the top of the line diesels from 20yrs ago, that's a beast.
