No but you have to factor in resale value. A diesel can make back a lot of its initial cost on that alone.
It did and here's the reason why; Look at how long I've had my truck. Diesel was a lot cheaper than gas back in the day and diesel also had more energy in it before ULSD. I could easily get 23~24 mpg empty on highway trips and the vast number of miles on my truck were accumulated back then. Gas engines got a fraction of that and the diesel engine upgrade cost was not what it is now.
So yes, it
was possible.
What's so surprising here is the petty jealousy toward diesels by a few.
Just because you don't have one doesn't mean everyone else is wrong.
Heck, I would wager that most diesel owners would go with something better (different from diesel) if it came along. I know I would.
