For those of you that use your truck for personal use, I admit, do not care about costs as much. For those of us that use them for business. Costs do play into the game. Many including myself, do spread sheets trying to figure out where the break even point will be, both miles and years.
My navigator for example. I COULD have gotten an equal with a DT466 or a T444E when it came out. Both motors will go 400k mile. I'm 25 years, 150k miles. $8000 less in cost for the IDI7.3 diesel I have. It is not driven at elevation, only up to around 1500' elevation. Been to 3000' a few times. Most distance is 30-50 miles away. Max speed 45-50 mph. Yeah 10-30 more ponies would be nice, and double the torque......reality is, it does.the.job. in some cases, better than my 05 max!
Let's just say, I would never had the.more expensive option paid off.
Also, one needs to realize, some of us, myself in this realm. Do not, nor will get top dollar trade in or resale if I sell the truck. My swag when I trade a rig in with 5 years, rare, 125k miles, a few dents scrapes etc, will put me at half the cost of shiners estimate for resale. I also do not buy leather rigs like a king ranch! I do pay less too. Even at that, resale will be less than the person buying a rig for play!
I should point out, I've destroyed my share of rhino/line x liners than I care to admit.
I've found with.the 4-8k cost difference vs an equal gas, to be in the 125-175k miles before break even. For me, this is too many years generally speaking for a return. If I can do this in 60-90k miles, 3-4 years, I'll for it.
Personal use is one thing, business, totally different scoring on return payoff.
