Would I gain much by using load range D tires on a 4500 lb GVWR dual axle trailer?
My current load range C tires (Karrier Loadstar 205/75 R 14) have held up well. They have a 1760 lb load rating, which seems like plenty of safety margin.
What exactly is load range D anyway? I know it will allow 65 psi inflation, but what is the load limit?
You would gain nothing by going from C to D range because your trailers GVWR is only 4500lbs. Stick with the C rated tires heck I have the 205/75/14s Load C's on my 7200lb GVWR trailer and have never had an issues after 40k miles. Even with the so called china bombs that were on there originally. I now have the Carlisle Radial HDs and like them alot. They also give the higher speed rating of 81 MPH. My original Trailer Kings were rated for 65. I like having the higher speed rating for piece of mind even though I never tow above 65 anyway. Stick with the Load C and you will be fine. Most people have issues with their trailer tires from lack of proper maintenance and inflation of the tires. I always make sure mine are cold inflated to the 50 psi before rolling down the road.
Disagree completely. A "D" tire is tougher than a C tire, and not just in load capacity. It will have more puncture resistance as well.... This may be important to you... It is to me.
I once had a Marathon C tire get a puncture and rapidly deflate. We were on a gravel road about 200 yards from our campsite. A sharp piece of gravel did the tire in. was doing about 3 miles an hour... I was actually walking alongside the TT when it happened, directing DW. Really sucked to have to put the spare on to go the final 200 yards. Never had something like that happen with D or E tires.
And I will completely disagree with you as I've had both sitting there side by side same brand tire load C and load D not much difference at all between the 2 in thickness. I would say if that puncture happened to that tire that easily it would have also happened to the D and I would take it as odd things do happen just my honest opinion
