Do I need to register and get insurance on my truck camper?

6 months ago I bought a 2000 Fleetwood Angler camper cash off someone off Craigslist. They gave me no paperwork. I did see label showing VIN#. Last week while driving off-road it was really windy and camper with truck was swaying that's when I realized I probably should be insuring the camper. Anyhow I'm new to all this so just wondering what others think. Thank you
  • I believe that would be high even if it were new.
  • Thank you everyone!
When I spoke with my insurance agent she told me it would cost $190 for 6 months
I need to get the details because that seems high maybe if it was brand new but it's not so now I know what to ask thank you
  • It depends on your insurance coverage. You should check with your agent on when and how it is currently covered.

NADA values my 20 year old camper at $4000.

My annual premium is less than $36/yr.

That's pretty cheap insurance and for me and it beats coughing up the cash for another one.
  • The only papers I received when I bought my used camper was a bill of sale from the owner. She told me that she never received anything from the previous owner other than a bill of sale.

I have my camper fully insured. According to NADA its valued at nearly twice what I paid for it. I would definitely talk with your ins agent. Its cheaper than you think.

Here in Utah we're required to register our slide-in campers.

I had to had the vin # verified by a LEO. When I took the paper work to the DMV they could not pull up a record of my camper ever being registered.

My camper is now registered, insured and I now have a title of ownership for it.

I also registered and insured my ATV trailer which is not required here in Utah. It too has a replacement value of more than what I paid for it when I purchased it new 12 years ago. I now have a title of ownership for it too.
  • gbopp covered the registration question.

As far as insurance goes, it depends on two things. If you unload it at a campground, then at a minimum I would get liability insurance in case someone gets hurt playing around or under it.

If you don't unload, I would suggest you contact your truck's insurance company and ask specific questions in regards to liability and comprehensive coverage while it is on the truck and off the truck at your house or storage facility.

In regards to comprehension coverage, I wouldn't insure it because they won't pay very much for a 17 year old camper. However, if you can't afford to buy another one if you don't get something, than insurance may be for you.

Some companies will cover it by just adding a rider to the truck policy for not much money.

I never unload on the road and can cover the $5k my camper is worth in the unlikely hood something happens to it so I don't carry any insurance.
  • Welcome to the forum.
Until someone gives you a better answer, here is a site that lists states that require TC's to be registered.

    Truck Camper Adventure

I would check with your insurance agent about the TC insurance.

    Enjoy your travels.
