Question was about solar, seem to be talking about 2 different things here, solar charging and shore/inverter.
Our solar runs 24/7. Checking water generally about 6 months water needs topping off. That depends on use/weather. But never experienced solar controller 'boiling' batteries. I tend to think a battery maintained will last longer than a battery that just sets between use.
We also have camper covered (poly) at the house and solar still works to maintain batteries.
Our '01 is on 3rd pair of batteries, about 6 years each. Current pair are about 4 years old. Other than last set, one battery dumped a cell at 6 years, generally the 5th year start seeing performance/reserve dropping off.
