Do you cross your safety chains?

I cross my chains, was told it was law here (Ontario) but have never explored that claim. My chains are fairly close together on the tongue, so not much of a cradle is created.

I take my hitch head out so that I don't bang my legs on it or grease my pants, however if someone is close enough to hit an installed hitch head then they are way way way too close to the truck.
