For some people it makes them feel better because it's one risk they can control. You have no control over the risk of driving on the road. You're completely at the mercy of the other drivers on the road. But, you can turn that little valve off.
It's all in how a person thinks. Some people can process the fact that a risk is very small, and for others any risk they can control is too much risk. It's what makes the world go around.
