Do you lock or unlock the hitch while pulling your TT?

I've always have locked the hitch when towing my TT, simply because I don't want to lose the lock. But should you lock the hitch when towing?
  • Pretty sure it's mandatory in my area to have a pin of some kind in there while towing. I always do. I use a lock as opposed to a pin with a clip, because somebody stole my clip a few years back.
  • Personal preference.
I never did. When using WD, the hitch cannot come off of the ball.. If not using WD, then yes, a lock or pin should be used, becuse it is possible for the hitch to come off the ball.
  • you should have something through the hitch pin. I use one of the hairpin clips on mine.

However if your trailer uses a 2 5/16" ball and the keyed security lock is one that goes through the hitch pin, it's at best a cosmetic lock. that leaves the ball socket on the hitch open and all it takes for someone to drive off with your trailer is for them to drop the hitch onto a 2" ball, and then drive off.

If you want a security lock you want something that covers the ball socket, kinda hard to tow with that on the hitch.

when we re graveled our community RV parking lot, even with way advance notice a few people neglected to take their trailers out. I just put in my 2" ball for my utility trailer dropped the hitch on the ball, it goes way up into the socket and towed them out of the way.
