Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi towing 6,700#s?

I finally had my 26' travel trailer weighed, and loaded down I am at 6,700#s. I am now in the market for a newer tow vehicle.
I am ready to upgrade from my 2003 Tahoe, to something that I can tow more comfortably with.(tired of getting white knuckles towing with my short wheelbase Tahoe)

For financial reasons, I don't want a diesel, or a big block (8.1 or v10 etc)
What is in my price range, is Dodges 2005-2007 Dodge Ram 1500s 5.7 Hemi 4x4 4 doors.
Anyone have experience towing travel trailers around 6,700#s 26' like mine with a Dodge 1500 5.7??
Control? Power?
I mainly camp locally here in Ohio, and Indiana, but few times a year travel down 75 South into southern Kentucky where its moderately hilly.
I would love to get a 2500 but they are out of my price range for now. It seems these 1500 Dodges have pretty high towing capacities.
Thanks for the help!
  • I pull a 32' tt with my 2008 1500 Hemi 4x4. I've never weighed my trailer but according to the weight label it should be around 5200 lbs and we pack lightly. Just returned from a long trip and did 65 mph all day at 10mpg. Truck did just fine. Just get a good WD hitch and you'll be ok.
  • thanks for all tbe feedback guys.
Don, good luck with the trip tomorrow, yes please let me know how it performs. What is your loaded weight of your 25' camper?
  • We have a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Express Crew(with trailer pkg and trailer brakes) and tow a 23ft Ameri-Lite 23BW and tows like a dream. Don't think you'll be disappointed
  • I will tell you tomorrow .. I have a 05 Dodge Ram with the 5.7 Hemi and a 25' camper... we are going on our first outing on Sunday.. I'll be driving thru a few hills along the way so it will be a good test to see how every thing works out. ..

    Don
  • Haven't owned or towed with one, but I think a half-ton Ram with the Hemi & 5-speed trans would be enough for that trailer.

What many half-ton haters ignore is that recent half-tons (last 7-8 years at least) are every bit as much truck as 3/4 tons from the late 90s-early 2000s, with excellent brakes, big output motors, and 5 or 6 speed transmissions.
