Stock truck other then exhaust and air intake, trans serviced 5 times fuild and filter and band adjustment at 100k. Had I replaced the converter when I was told to the transmission would have been fine.

100K for the first band adjustment? That's way too long (esp towing) and will cause a domino effect to failure. It can make for an expesive rebuild too because it will destroy the drum and it isn't a normal wear item. In fact they are hard to get because they aren't made anymore.
Sorry Don, I don't mean to lecture but it's important that others keep up with those kinda things.
For the OP:
The 48RE is no weaker than any other trans and will give a good long service life it taken care of and if no more than about 40 HP is added. It gets its bad rep form those that put tuners on it and tear it apart - which can be done with any auto.
