To the OP: Only problem I have experienced with the 48RE in my '05 was a leaking seal in the tailshaft, about a $120 repair for the seal and labor. I have the fluid and filter changed every 30K miles and the bands are checked and adjusted at each fluid change (my mechanic's recommendation). The transmission has been flawless through towing and normal driving. I did have a temp gauge installed with a sensor in the pan. That isn't the supposed optimal location for the sensor but it gives a better sense of the fluid temp status than the onboard idiot light does. IIRC, the mechanic told me that light won't illuminate until the fluid temp is 250-280 degrees, and at that point tranny cooking may be underway to some degree.
