When I upgraded my truck, I removed the dealer installed wiring from my old truck. I reused the socket connection but ran ithe pigtail to the back of the bed. I hooked the 5 wires for the camper lights to the trailer connector and ran an 8 ga from the engine compartment (with 40 amp breaker) to a separate connector for the power and ground at the rear. It was not that difficult and new truck has beefed up alternator.
