I have two boys...big boys...those bunks in a lot of quad bunks are narrow and tiny...the double of double is THEIR preference as they get much larger beds. Our next trailer will likely be a double over double configuration.
IMHO....if I had three boys, I would still go with a double over double configuration and simply make the dinette bed or, an even better option is the sofa air bed for the third child.
That way everyone gets a big comfy bed...and making the third bed is not a big deal...in our PUP our oldest son gets the Queen size bed and the youngest gets the couch bed...it's his responsibility to make it of the evening and put it up of the morning. To which he has no problem doing because he gets his own separate bed. :)
I recommend thinking ahead and purchasing beds that will fit their frames in 3-5 years...not beds that fit now. I hope that makes sense.
