DPF

People sometimes ask some questions about the Diesel Particulate Filter. Here are some answers:

We just got back from a 790 km road trip. When we began the DPF screen said filter was 85% full. It took 500 km before DPF full was reached. At that point I selected auto regeneration and travelled another 20 km before the DPF started regenerating. After the DPF screen said "0% full" the cleaning continued for about 18 additional km. It took 48 km to clean the DPF and the average fuel economy during this 48 km segment was 20 litres/100 km. After the DPF finished cleaning we drove about 240 km at the end of which the screen still displayed DPF 0% full.

Along the lines of Cummins12V98, my '15 and now '17 trucks have gone into re-gen while driving down the road, because it pops up on the dash saying so. As for my semis I drive at work, neither one ('12 & '15 Freightliners w/ DDT13 engines) has ever told me it needs re-genning. In fact, my '15 has 360,000+ miles and not once have I gotten a icon saying it needs ti be re-genned so as far as I know it does it while going down the road automatically.

Some equipment have indicator lights to tell you when a regen is taking place.... many don't. Some have guages showing how full the exhaust filter is.... many don't. One indicator that most trucks have is the instantaneous fuel economy readout.

  • No idea when mine does it's thing, never gone into forced re-gens. IGNORANCE IS BLISS!

is that only on the 2017 up trucks? i know my 2016 doesnt have it, not sure if i want to bother visiting a dealer and paying just so i can see it either.

This feature can be added on your 2016 as well by the dealer or with Forscan. Forscan is a free software download that allows you to make these changes as well as various others to your truck. You would need to purchase an OBD adapter such as the OBD Link MX scan tool. There is a bit of a process involved.

Adding the DPF,% full screen and making the auto regen check box live can be done with Forscan or added at the dealership.
  • Must be something that comes w/ the Platinum Edition where you can do a man re-gen. My last truck and this one both do it by themselves.
