dragging the propane tanks...

My camper is a 16 jayco White Hawk 24 mbh,
We had the two 30lb LP tanks fall off the trailer on our last day of a 3 week vacation. I drug them for about 5 miles or so until we figured out what was happening.

Everything that holds the tanks on plus the cover were missing. The hoses, tank switch and regulator seem ok. The tanks still holding propane but are shot.

Luckily the tanks did their job an held together.....

I would check the top wing bolt every time we would get back on the road and it always seemed tight. The only thing that I can think that went wrong was there was no lock nut on the stud that holds the tanks to the base and it shook loose. I never had the tank cover off and I assumed it was locked in to the base and wouldn't unthread.
Does that stud require a lock nut?

  • Boy, you must have had the tunes cranked to not hear them for 5 miles. I am paranoid about stuff like that so I am constantly looking in the mirrors and listening for new noises. I might have to mount a backup camera there just so I can see the hitch and tanks.

Glad you had no real damage other than the tanks.
  • Your are very lucky that the top shut off did not break loose, I have seen what happened whet the top broke off and oxygen tank, tore the inside of the van up, looked like a missile (which it was) got thru, plus the LP is very violate and might have exploded or you or some one else could have ran over the bottles which I am sure would have caused considerable damage to anything that hit it.The price of 2 new LP bottles and a couple of lock washers seems cheap .
and a few drops of thread lock.
    Good luck and Happy camping
  • I also added the appropriate size nyloc to the threaded shaft at the bottom.

The top....I added another wing nut to the wing nut.

I also chained the tanks to the frame.

The actual cover, in my case, is only held on with a bungee cord underneath.

    Glad there was no BOOM!.
  • Yes, and the "lock nut" I put on the bottom end of the all thread-rod is the kind with the nylon insert. At the top, I drilled a hole in one of the wings of the big wingnut and use a piece of safety wire to keep it from unwinding.
  • I added a lock nut to both the top and bottom of the threaded rod that secures the tanks after noticing mine would loosen up while traveling. Haven't had a problem since.

Glad to hear your tanks held up as well as they did!
  • Scary! A leak and a spark, and you'd have had a rocket pack. I like the idea of the lock nut for extra safety. That is my next project!

Yes!! Every TT I have had has had that missing. My first TT it loosened up on me.. I added a locknut AND some loctite. Did the same with every TT since.
