When I park the travel trailer, and it's going to be there for a few weeks, I open my low point drain, and then open the hot water faucet at the bathtub. It drains the water heater except for an inch or two in the bottom. Then, before I pull out on a trip, I connect the water hose, and fill the system with water, and make sure the water heater is full, by letting it run in the bathtub til the air is out of the lines.
I've had stinking water when I let it set for a couple of weeks with water in it.
When I leave my house for a few days, I turn off both water heaters, turn off the water supply line, and open a low point drain that I installed in the incoming water line. I then open the farthest hot water faucet from that point, and it drains both water heaters, and all the lines under the house.
I came back home one time to a broken line, and it won't ever happen again.
