DRW back to SRW

Anybody changed from Dually to SRW?

Why?

Are you happy with your decision?

What do you haul that made you want a dually?

The new generation SRW trucks have payloads of 4000#+...this may be a game changer.

Thx, Bill

  • While the newer trucks do have a larger payload, I would not want to max out the payload with a TC. I have a 4,300# payload and haul a 2,400# camper (wet and loaded). I can see going up to a 3,500# but any heavier and I will want a DRW for the wider stance, 2x the sidewalls to help combat the higher COG. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see enough gain in SRW to outweight the lost safety and better handling.

Harder to park with the wide hips,

I've had my dually for 10 years. I don't daily drive it, though I have DD'd it for one summer. Extra width has never been an issue parking, primarily because regardless if which vehicle I drive, I park far away from other vehicles.

The new GM HD SRW trucks have a higher GVWR than my 2009 dually. I looked at a 2020 SRW 3500HD yesterday, GVWR was 12,200

It isn’t about a Wannabe Trucker” it is about future proofing our TV. Even with a
4,000# payload, one needs to remember other things eat up part of that. We lost about 1,400# to the in bed tool box, hitch, DW, me, our sweet dog, leaving us with about 4,000# available. Had I started with 4,000# I might not have enough payload left for the 2,700# pin of our 5er.
I park where I want to in parking lots and parking garages, unless the beams are too low
  • I would switch back in a heartbeat if I went with a lighter TC or needed the truck for a daily driver. I don’t use my DRW as a daily driver. There are tradeoffs going either way.

The DRW does have disadvantages, but I can get by with one for the times I don’t have the TC on.
  • Over the years I went from SRW crew cab, to dually single cab, to srw 4WD super cab to finally special order what I like - DRW supercab in RWD.
Only last purchase was 100% my decision, when other was purchase of opportunity.
Some people hear bad wrap about drw. What I found is that mpg penalty is marginal, when cargo capacity is hands down the winner.
If you use DRW as grocery getter you will have issue at Safeway parking lots.
Not an issue when you use it for TC.
  • I would never go back to SRW. After feeling the difference in stability in 60mph winds on I80 in Wyoming and Nebraska this past November and having driven an SRW modded with stableloads, airbags and 19.5 tires is similar conditions the Dually wins hands down with a top heavy load regardless of what the rated payload numbers might be. Just my opinion after 10 years carrying a 4600 pound camper in the bed.
